The marginal district is sensitive to Uttarkashi disasters. The people of Uttarkashi have often faced disasters like earthquake, flood and landslides. In the year 1750, the hill broke down to Bhagirathi due to overflow, causing a lake of about 14 km and three villages were absorbed in it.
Senior Gender Scientist of Garhwal University and Head of Department of Bhul Sciences Prof. Mahendra Pratap Singh Bisht says that in the year 1750, the Danda hill of Danda near Jhala in Harshil region broke from an altitude of about 1900 to 2000 meters to Bhagirathi under Sukki village, which stopped the flow of Bhagirathi and about 14 km long lake from Jhala to Jangla. Told that like Dharli, Harshil’s army camp is also situated at the mouth of the old glacier Evelyn shoot.
The glaciers are over, but their debris in the upper parts of the hill is still left which invites such a disaster from time to time during excess rainfall. Told that since 1750, disasters are coming here continuously, despite this lesson is not being taken. There is continuous settlement at unsafe places. The government should take cognizance by marking such places.
Kedar Taal Inspection requirement
Pro. Bisht says that Gangotri has Kedar Tal at the left end of Gangotri. This is a glacier-generated lake that is gradually increasing. There is a lot of need to monitor it continuously so that Gangotri can be protected from the danger. Told that since 2019, he has been constantly observing it from the data of the house. Pro. Bisht, while being the director of the Uttarakhand Space Use Center in the east, keeps observing the said glacier lakes. Pro. Bisht has also been the director of Yukes in the past.
Incident of rain and cloudburst in Uttarakhand
Senior geologist Yashpal Sundriyal said that Birbal Sahni Pura Science Institute Lucknow has issued a 500 -year paper. In which it has been told that the rain (Ranfall) in Uttarakhand has decreased but the incidents of cloudburst and excess rainfall have increased continuously. The reason for this is global warming. It is said that due to cloudburst in 1978, the lake was formed in Kanodia Garh near Dabrani and when this lake was broken, the water level of Bhagirathi also increased, causing a large extent to flow to the Josiyada region of Uttarkashi.
However, people had received information earlier. Therefore, people left their homes and did not lose life. Told that since 1998, many major incidents of cloudburst and excess rainfall have taken place in the Garhwal region. Despite this, the government is not serious. People are building hotels and resorts on the flood plane, but they are not being stopped. Scientists have given suggestions to governments many times but the government is not taking lessons from the events.
