Following the allegations made by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha about disturbances in voter lists, the Chief Election Officer of Karnataka and Maharashtra wrote a letter to him. In this letter, he has been asked to fill the affidavit under the election rules and name the voters who have claimed that they are either disqualified or have been excluded from the list despite being eligible or despite being eligible.
Rahul Gandhi recently alleged in a press conference that there has been a large scale disturbance in voter lists in Maharashtra, Karnataka and some other states. He said that millions of such names have been added, which are disqualified and the names of millions of qualified voters have been disappeared from the list. Rahul called it a ‘theft of vote’ and said that the fairness and credibility of the Election Commission is now under question.

Election Commission sought written evidence
The Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka has written in a letter to Rahul Gandhi that under the election rules, if a person questions the validity of the voter list, he has to give details in writing. In the letter, Rahul has been expected to signed an affidavit under Rule 20 (3) (b) and provide the names of such voters to investigate their claims and legal action can be initiated if necessary.
Election Commission becomes an issue of political debate
These allegations of Rahul Gandhi have created a stir in political circles. Congress leaders say that this is not only a matter of Karnataka or Maharashtra, but an attempt is being made to influence the electoral process across the country. At the same time, the BJP retaliated and said that the Congress has been shocked by the call of defeat and now it is putting unnecessary pressure on the Election Commission.
What will happen now?
Now everyone’s eyes are on Rahul Gandhi’s response. Will he fill the affidavit and hand over the name to the Election Commission or will it be only a matter of rhetoric? The Election Commission has made it clear that if they find evidence, they are committed to taking appropriate action. This case has become a major examination between the fairness of the Commission and the confidence of political parties before the upcoming elections.
