The Government Railway Police (GRP), Thane, arrested a 28-year-old man, who in an inebriated condition, boarded a Kalyan-bound local train and molested a 32-year-old woman travelling in the general compartment on Sunday evening.
The woman raised an alarm when the fellow commuters nabbed him, hit him and handed him over to the Thane GRP. The incident occurred between Dadar and Thane. The case is now transferred to Kurla police station.
The woman was travelling with her husband, brother and daughter. They boarded at Dadar and were on their way home in Thane. The accused, identified as Aftab Alamnur Mohammad Ansari, 28, a resident of Byculla, boarded the same train at around 6.30pm.
The complainant, in her statement, said, “The man asked me if I was alone with my daughter, I told him my husband is on the other side of the same compartment. The accused repeated the same question after Kanjurmarg station. I again replied the same and ignored him. The third time, he whispered in my ears, asking me to look at what he was doing and did an obscene gesture.”
She raised an alarm and the commuters attacked him and handed him over to the Thane GRP.
P Kande, senior police inspector, GRP, Thane, said, “We arrested the accused. He was in an inebriated state and had a habit of getting drunk and creating nuisance. We arrested him and handed over the case to Kurla police station.”
The accused was produced in the court by Kurla GRP and was given judicial custody. He added, “The accused has several history of misbehaving with women in a drunken state. He is unemployed and troubles his family with his drinking habits.”
