Mumbai: A 32-year-old man was arrested on Monday for allegedly slitting the throat of his wife after she refused to return to her husband’s village.
According to the Amboli police, the man was identified as Somor Konaay, a native of Murshidabad district of West Bengal, who came to Mumbai on August 1, in search of his wife, Adinabibi Shaikh (31), who came to Mumbai in search of a job.
Shaikh is Konaay’s second wife. The couple got married this year, and they fought over petty issues, said the police.
Shaikh arrived in Mumbai on July 28, and was staying with a few relatives in Behram Baug in Jogeshwari West. Due to a lack of job opportunities in her husband’s village, she did not want to go back.
Officials said after Konaay spotted Shaikh on Sunday night, he started insisting that she should return with him but Shaikh refused.
Bandopant Bansode, a senior police inspector of Amboli police station said that in a fit of rage, Konaay removed a knife from his pocket and slit Shaikh’s throat and fled the spot leaving her bleeding.
Bansode said the woman was rushed to Cooper Hospital, where she underwent surgery and was given 25 stitches to treat the cut wound. The police then recorded her statement and arrested her husband, who is booked for attempting to murder her.
Manjunath Singe, a deputy commissioner of police zone 9, said that Konaay had bought the knife on Sunday before meeting his wife. Singe formed three teams which were deployed at important railway stations, airport and one team searched the Lower Parel area where his mobile tower location was traced and arrested him on Monday on the charge of an attempt to murder.
