IIT-B, IIT-M record best placement season ever in 2021-22 | Mumbai news

Mumbai: Despite reeling under the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, premier Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have reported one of their best placements in 2021-22. Hiring experts attributed this increase in recruitment and salary packages to the increasing transition towards digitisation in the last two years, especially in the technology industry.

IIT Bombay and Madras released their annual placement report on Monday, labelling the 2021-22 placement season as one of the best ever in terms of total jobs offered and accepted, the highest salary packages offered—domestic and international, as well as the highest median-salary recorded.

“IIT Bombay has achieved the highest ever number of students placed this year with the total number of accepted offers being 1,441 as of May 15, 2022, compared to 1,150 recorded the year before. The highest number of offers was rolled out by the engineering and technology sector,” said the annual placement report by IIT-B. It further states that prominent hiring was done by core engineering, IT/software, finance and consulting sectors.

Placements in IITs are held in two phases — phase one in December and the second phase between January and June. As per the IIT B report, the total job offers made in 2021-22 in two phases was 1,878, of which 1,441 jobs were accepted by students—including 201 pre-placement offers (PPOs). The highest domestic salary offered was 1.8 crore, while maximum international salary offered was 2.1 crore.

The annual placement report released by IIT Madras highlights that the institute has recorded the highest ever number of job offers received during campus placement in an academic year. “A total of 1,199 job offers were received across two phases in 2021-22. In addition, 231 PPOs were also received which led to a total of 1,430 job offers. This is significantly higher than the previous highest of 1,151 job offers recorded during the 2018-19 academic year,” said the statement released by the institute.

“The average salary received by students of the 2021-22 batch is 21.48 lakh per annum. As many as 80% of students who opted for campus placements in 2021-22 have received job offers, leading to record-high figures,” said a spokesperson for IIT M.

“We are witnessing a massive demand for technical talent surpassing any previous demand momentum. It is at an all-time high with customers rapidly accelerating their adoption of digital business model, which has led to a buoyant market with multiple opportunities for fresh talent,” said Animesh Chaudhary, a talent acquisition expert.

While the placement cell of IIT Delhi is yet to release its annual report, officials have previously shared how the first phase of placements from December 1-15, 2021, attracted a record number of job offers.

“We welcomed recruiters hiring in new-age domains like artificial intelligence, big data and cloud solutions, design development for high volume manufacturing, machine learning, robotics etc. across core sectors in addition to the traditional profiles and this has pushed the overall job offers received this year,” said Anishya Madan, head (Office of Career Services), IIT Delhi, after the first phase of recruitment ended in December last year.
