Nearly 9000 Russian troops are to be deployed in Belarus as part of a new joint force to ‘protect its border’. The first batch of troops has arrived in Belarus and will be stationed soon. Minsk called the move ‘purely defensive’ amid fears that Belarus could join Russian forces in their offensive in Ukraine. Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian counterpart, Alexander Lukashenko, agreed to set up a ‘regional force’.
