Adani applies for electricity distribution licence in Navi Mumbai | Mumbai news

Mumbai: Adani Electricity has applied to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) for a licence to distribute electricity in Navi Mumbai. At present, the consumers in these areas get powers from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and if the licence is granted, Adani will be the second supplier.

The MERC accepted their application on Friday and now suggestions/objections have been called. At present, Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited supplies power to Mumbai suburbs (except Bhandup and Mulund) and Mira Bhayander.

The consumers in the island city of Mumbai have the option to choose from Tata Power or BEST and the suburbs can choose from Tata Power or Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited.

At present, the MSEDCL supplies 9500 million units to these areas where Adani Electricity Navi Mumbai has applied for a licence. Consumers will have a choice of suppliers between the incumbent utility and Adani Electricity after the grant of the Parallel Electricity Distribution Licence, the presentation given to MERC says.

The Adani group is planning to invest 5700 crore for the new network.
