Mumbai: Two schoolchildren were killed and 48 others sustained injuries after a luxury bus they were travelling in overturned in Maharashtra’s Raigad district on Sunday night, police said.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 8pm on Sunday near the Magic Point on the Khopoli Ghat in Raigad.
“A luxury bus was heading towards Chembur from Lonavala. A total of 48 Class X students, along with two teachers, of the Mayank Coaching Classes in Chembur were on board the bus, when it overturned on the ghat and landed on its left side,” said superintendent of police (Raigad), Somnath Gharge.
The injured students were rushed to nearby hospitals, where Hritika Khanna (17) and Raj Mhatre (16) were declared dead while the others are being treated.
“We will record statements of the students and eyewitnesses to ascertain the exact sequence of events, and take legal action accordingly. At the moment, our priority is to ensure that all students and teachers aboard the bus are accounted for and tended to,” said an officer.
