The last match of the five -match Test series between India and England was played at the Oval, London. Team India had set a target of 374 runs in front of England, in response to which England’s second innings was reduced to 367 runs. Regular captain Ben Stokes was not playing in this match. Oli Pope was captaining him in his place. However, former England captain Michael Vaughan believes that in the absence of Stokes, not the Pope, but the captaincy should be handed over to Harry Brook.
Brooke showed a glimpse of Badball on Sunday and after Siraj was given a life, he scored 111 runs in 98 balls. He hit 14 fours and two sixes in the innings. Brooke shared a 195 -run partnership for the fourth wicket with Joe Root and took the match away from India’s grip. When Brooke was on 19 runs, his catch was missed from Siraj. Siraj collided with the boundary line with a catch. Brook redeemed this life and scored a 10th century of Test career. Only then Von has demanded him to hand over the captaincy in the absence of Stokes.
On the other hand, Oli Pope could not do anything special in this series. In the last Test, he scored 22 and 27 runs. In this series, he scored 306 runs in nine innings at an average of 34. Former England Test captain Michael Vaughan believes that Harry Brook’s presence on the field gives a good leadership capacity and he should be given command after Ben Stokes. Vaughan, who won 26 out of 51 Tests as captain, believes that Oli Pope is a great vice -captain, but Brook should be handed over the captaincy after Stokes’ retirement.
He said, ‘Leadership ability in Harry Brooke is natural. Brook can be the captain if Ben Stokes is injured in future and not Pope vice -captains. Oli Pope is a good vice -captain. They have good suggestions to give to the captain, but sometimes vice -captains are not good captains. Marcus Traksothic was a great vice -captain, but not a captain in my view.
