The Madras High Court on Sunday heard the petition that has demanded to stop any public function, rally or program until the official investigation of the Karur stampede is completed by actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s party Tamilga Vatri Vadri (TVK).

Justice N Senthilkumar of Madras High Court heard an immediate petition at 4:30 pm, demanding Vijay’s party TVK to stop from public functions, rallies or meetings. The petition was filed after the incident in Karur on Saturday, where the TVK’s promotional program caused a stampede and at least 40 people died. While dozens of people were injured.

The petitioner argued for the danger of more loss of life from political meetings

This tragedy, which has shocked the state, has raised serious questions on the program management, police safety and mob control measures. According to sources, the petitioner had argued that continuing political meetings on a large scale without any accountability could lead to more loss of life. The petitioner said that the state government should conduct a thorough investigation before allowing new rallies.

The Tamil Nadu government has already ordered an inquiry and senior officers and top police officers are reviewing the flaws. Leaders of various parties including Chief Minister MK Stalin, opposition leader Edappadi’s Palaniswami and central leaders have expressed grief and appealed to take strict steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents.

Deputy Chief Minister visited hospital and took stock of treatment

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Udayanidhi Stalin and other ministers visited Karur Government Medical College Hospital on Sunday and took stock of the treatment of the injured. Also reviewed relief works. Parties like VCK, TMC and DMDK have also raised the demand to increase compensation for the families of the victims.

Vijay demanded a stampede to be investigated by CBI or SIT

Earlier today, Tamil Vatri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay turned to the Madras High Court. He demanded the High Court to investigate the stampede at the Karur rally on 27 September with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or Special Investigation Team (SIT).
