AI 171 Crash: Accident in Ahmedabad in June
Air India’s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (Flight AI 171), which flew from Ahmedabad to London Gatewick on 12 June 2025, crashed within one minute of the takeoff. The accident took place in Meghani Nagar area of Ahmedabad, killing 260 people and only one passenger survived.
This month, the Indian Pilot Federation wrote a letter to the Ministry of Civil Aviation demanding a judicial inquiry into the accident. The FIP alleged that AAIB had severely affected the fairness, legality and reliability of the ongoing investigation.
Shocking revelations in AAIB’s preliminary report
According to the preliminary report of AAIB, both engines were suddenly cut off from run, which stopped fuel supply. The report said that in the cockpit voice recording, one pilot was heard asking the other why he did the cutoff, while the other pilot denies it.
The report further stated that the aircraft achieved the maximum recorded air speed at around 08:08:42 UTC, 180 knots IAS and soon after that the fuel cutoff switches of the engine 1 and engine 2 went into the cutoff position by a run in a interval of 1 second respectively. As the fuel supply stopped, the speed of engine N1 and N2 began to decrease with the take-off value.
