The police asked suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma to record her statement in connection with her remarks against the Prophet Mohammed.
The Maharashtra Police on Tuesday summoned suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma on June 22 for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammed recently that drew condemnation from several Islamic nations and opposition parties.
The police asked Sharma to record her statement in connection with her remarks against the Prophet, news agency PTI reported. An FIR had been registered against Sharma by the Mumbra Police in Thane district of Maharashtra following her remarks. Accordingly, Sharma has been summoned by the Mumbra Police to record her statement before the investigating officer.
Addressing a press conference at the Mumbai Police headquarters, city police commissioner Sanjay Pandey on Monday had said, “We will call her to record her statement as per law and the legal procedure will be followed.”
The Mumbai Police had registered a case against the former BJP spokesperson on May 28 for the remarks made during a television news debate based on a complaint lodged by Irfan Sheikh, joint secretary of Raza Academy, a Muslim outfit.
Sharma was charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 153A (promoting enmity between groups) and 505(2) (statements conducing to public mischief), police had said.
Sharma was suspended from BJP on June 5 over the allegedly insulting remarks against the Prophet.
