‘No regrets over handling of Putin’: Ex-German Chancellor’s big declaration

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has defended her record on handling Vladimir Putin in her first major interview since leaving office. She said she had ‘nothing to apologise for’ over her response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, when she supported sanctions. Merkel insisted she had not been naive in her dealings with Russian President Vladimir Putin who she met regularly during her 16 years in office. She also defended her opposition to Ukraine joining NATO. Merkel has been accused by many of leaving Germany vulnerable by pursuing business-led relations with Russia.
